Using your EHIC or GHIC to see a doctor in Benidorm
A UK GHIC or EHIC covers medically necessary state healthcare in Benidorm, on the same basis as Spanish citizens. It does not cover private clinics, and you still pay part of prescription costs.
Not an emergency service. In an emergency, call 112.

Using it
How to use your card in Benidorm.
- Go to a public health centre or public hospital, not a private clinic.
- Take your GHIC or EHIC and your passport or ID.
- Before treatment, check that the clinic is part of the state system. Private clinics in tourist areas charge private fees.
- At the pharmacy, most visitors pay 50% of the prescription price, or 10% with a UK State Pension.
- In an emergency, call 112.
When an online doctor helps
If you prefer to speak in English.
Some visitors prefer a private consultation in English rather than waiting at a public health centre. English Doctor is a private service: you do not use your GHIC, and you pay €39 for a video or telephone consultation with a doctor registered in Spain.
Questions
Common questions.
Can I use my EHIC in Benidorm?
Yes, if it is still valid. A UK EHIC or GHIC covers medically necessary state healthcare in Spain on the same basis as Spanish citizens.
Do private clinics in Benidorm accept the GHIC?
No. The GHIC and EHIC cover state healthcare only. Check that a clinic is public before you are treated.
Do I pay for prescriptions with a GHIC?
GOV.UK says most visitors pay 50% of the prescription price, or 10% if they have a UK State Pension.
I live in Benidorm. Is the GHIC enough?
No. The GHIC is for visits. If you live in Spain, the rules are different: see the GOV.UK guidance on living in Spain and register for healthcare there.
I lost my card. What can I do?
GOV.UK advises contacting NHS Overseas Healthcare Services, who can issue a Provisional Replacement Certificate.
