Prescriptions

What medicines cost.

Medication is always paid at the pharmacy, separately from the consultation.

  • With a private or online prescription, you pay the pharmacy price of the medicine.
  • With a GHIC or EHIC in the public system, GOV.UK says most visitors pay 50% of the prescription price, or 10% if they have a UK State Pension.
  • Ask the pharmacist about the price before you buy if cost matters to you.

Travel insurance

Keep your receipts.

A GHIC or EHIC is not a replacement for travel insurance. If you see a private or online doctor, keep the invoice and check whether your policy covers private consultations.
