Wegovy (semaglutide) is a prescription-only weekly injection for weight management. Here is what the official information says, and how a doctor decides whether it suits you.

What Wegovy is
A prescription-only medicine made by Novo Nordisk, used with a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.

Is Wegovy right for you?
For weight management, Wegovy is approved for adults with a BMI of 30 or more, or 27 or more with a weight-related condition. Find your band, then take the pre-test.

How the Wegovy dose works
Wegovy is injected once a week. The dose is increased every 4 weeks over 16 weeks, to a maintenance dose of 2.4 mg. Your doctor decides the pace. Tap a step.

Wegovy should not be used during pregnancy. Contraception is recommended, and treatment should be stopped at least 2 months before a planned pregnancy. Wegovy should not be used during breastfeeding.

The doctor goes through your history, current medication and goals, and whether Wegovy may be appropriate.
- A clear decision
If treatment is appropriate, an e-prescription is sent by email for any pharmacy in Spain. Medication is paid at the pharmacy. A prescription is never guaranteed.

Is Wegovy available in Spain?
Yes. According to the Spanish medicines agency (AEMPS CIMA), Wegovy is marketed in Spain as the FlexTouch pen, from 0.25 mg to 2.4 mg. Wegovy tablets are now sold in Spanish pharmacies too, in strengths from 1.5 mg to 25 mg. A 7.2 mg dose is also marketed, in a separate single-use pen. All of them need a prescription.
Can I get Wegovy without a consultation?
No. Wegovy is a prescription-only medicine. A doctor assesses your history, current medication and goals, and decides whether it is appropriate. A prescription is never guaranteed.
How long does it take to reach the full dose of Wegovy?
The dose is increased every 4 weeks, from 0.25 mg, over 16 weeks to the maintenance dose of 2.4 mg once a week.
